Difficult relationship with consultant

Author marlimba Category ,

Q. Hi, Just looking for some advice. We tried to get an elective Cesarian due to a previous traumatic birth and a significant loss of blood after birth, almost causing the deaths of both mother and baby. Although we had this reason our consultant would not even listen to our explanation and refused to listen OR to give consent. This same consultant 2 weeks ago attempted to have a drug prescribed to my fiancee (the mother) that she was allergic to (which is in her notes) all of our midwives disagree with him on the cesarian and don't appear to have any confidence in him (as don't we at the moment) - he also refused to attend an early appointment for the risk of pre eclampsia based on my fiancee's first blood pressure reading although it is proven that pre-eclampsia usually comes between the 32nd week and full term. My question is what can we do about this? as we both have genuine concerns about the health of our unborn child and I have huge concerns over the health of my fian!cee too. He seems very uncaring and will not listen to why we are concerned - he also has said that my fiancee needs counselling due to this which we are annoyed about too What can we do? also who is higher than a consultant in a hospital as we really think a complaint is due about him? Thanks for your help A concerned father and father to be

A. Sorry to hear of the difficulties you are facing at the moment. Im sure you will appreciate it is difficult for me to comment on a specific case when it comes to a womans health as your fiance is not my own patient. The fact that she suffered a large blood loss at birth will not neccessarily mean that having a c-section will prevent this. A haemorrhage can still and often does happen during surgery. It is Major abdominal surgery and should never be taken lightly. I agree that the consultant may have overlooked the fact that she was allergic to that particular drug and it was good that this was spotted and stopped. A high initial blood pressure reading does not mean that she will suffer from pre eclampsia, it can be due to a number of factors including anxiety. Women often get this when in hospitals! If she has a real fear of giving birth then I suggest that she be referred to a member of the birth reflections team if available for counselling.

Ultimately if you are not happy with the consultant, call the maternity unit and ask to speak to the supervisor of midwives, you can always ask to be put under the care of another doctor.

I wish you all the best

A. It sounds like you may have a urine infection. I would suggest calling your GP or midwife and getting them to arrange a urine test to find out.
